Welcome to San Rafael

The hub of Marin County, San Rafael was founded in 1817 as the 20th California mission (Mission San Rafael Arcangel is open to visitors). Its tree-lined downtown is an eclectic mix of cafes, restaurants, shops, and galleries, reinvigorated by the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center. Frank Lloyd Wright fans shouldn't miss the county's Civic Center, one of the architect's last public buildings. Tours are available.
