Delicious, Casual Dining in Yountville

The town of Yountville’s official motto is “Taste Life Here!” and with so many celebrated restaurants calling the town home, it’s an invitation that is hard to refuse. Not all of them are fine-dining establishments, though, so if you’re looking for a more casual meal in Yountville, there are plenty of first-rate places to choose from.

Redd Wood
Somewhat high-end but still more casual than its parent restaurant, Redd Wood, Chef Richard Reddington’s second, more informal establishment, has a menu featuring wood-fired pizza, house-made pasta and small, traditional plates made in-house with local sustainable ingredients as part of the Napa Green Initiative. As with most restaurants in Wine Country, the restaurant has a well-curated wine list, emphasizing but not limited to, locally produced bottles. Weekend breakfasts are a special treat, especially the Doughnut of the Day.

Diners at the gourmet outpost can choose from the elegant, smartly appointed dining room, with a marvelous copper buoy converted into a lighting centerpiece, and the stunning courtyard on the outside patio with its hillside backdrop.

Like an afterword to a great work of literature, Addendum is a great restaurant in miniature, a succinct summary of a classic menu offered during lunch hours in a small building tucked into a garden behind the renowned Yountville restaurant Ad Hoc. Master Chef Thomas Keller, author of this classic cuisine, offers the most popular items from the main restaurant at a more affordable price, eschewing all the trappings of a sophisticated dining room and providing diners with upscale picnic grounds instead.

Essentially a lunch-only, fried-chicken shack out in back, it’s especially popular for to-go orders. You can place them in advance (highly recommended) by ordering online to let them know you’re coming and to decrease your wait time. Sides like macaroni salad, cole slaw and honey cornbread are included with full dinners.

Offering street food taken to the next level, Protea uses a variety of advanced cooking techniques to prepare an equally varied menu that changes daily. It includes everything from Cubano sandwiches and rice bowls to tostados and tacos, and uses fresh products sourced locally in the Napa Valley. Owner Chef Anita Cartagena strives to provide a high standard of Latin-inspired cuisine, with an emphasis on Puerto Rican traditional dishes. She is happy to accommodate customers’ dietary restrictions and will provide vegetarian and vegan dishes made-to-order, in addition to her regularly available Veggie Wrap with house-made hummus and the Mushroom Bleu Cheese Empanada.

Counter service is combined with tableside delivery, and the rooftop seating is a popular choice. Located in the downtown food and wine district of Yountville, the restaurant is closed on Wednesdays and open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. the rest of the week.

Pacific Blues Café
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all great times to let your hair down and relax with some classic American comfort food at the Pacific Blues Café. Whether it’s Vanilla Cinnamon French Toast to start your day, or the luxurious Grilled Polenta and Veggies followed by a digestif to end your day on a satisfying note, you can find reasonably priced and satisfying selections that will please most palates.

The dessert menu is particularly fun, with choices like the Snappin’ Cracklin Rice Krispie Trash Treat with Peanut Snickers, Marshmallow, Carmel, and Hot Fudge Dipping Sauce, and the Choo Choo Cheesecake with Strawberry Puree to top off your meal and satisfy your sweet tooth.

The atmosphere is as inviting as the menu, with outdoor seating on a lovely, partially covered patio that allows dogs. Part of V Marketplace, Pacific Blues Café is a great place to take a break in the middle of your shopping, before stocking up at neighboring Chiarello Vineyards Tasting Room and Kollar Artisan Chocolates for champagne and chocolates to take home.

A restaurant in the heart of Yountville with pizza at the heart of its menu, Ciccio serves classic Italian cuisine with the occasional light nouveau touch, in addition to those authentic pizzas straight from a wood-fired oven. Luxurious dishes such as Cacio E Pepe (bucatini with black pepper) with a Mixed Chicory Salad or Ribollita (Tuscan kale and white bean soup), and startlingly innovative pizzas such as the Squash Blossom, Garlic Scape Pesto will represent an impossible choice, but the dilemma is easily resolved with additional visits.

Owned by the Altamura winery family, the post-modern, rustic family-style restaurant at 6770 Washington Street also has an impressive, but surprisingly affordable wine selection with Sangioveses, Nebbiolos and Negroamaros from their own vineyards as standouts.

R+D Kitchen
Situated at the north end of Yountville amid a number of wineries, R+D Kitchen has a relaxed but lively atmosphere both inside and out, with sports on TV indoors and open fire pits in the outdoor seating, which is next to a garden and a koi pond surrounded by lilies. The menu combines typical American fare with California and Pacific options such as sushi, the Cashew Kale Salad and a Veggie Sandwich that holds its own in both quality and popularity against the many burgers. The signature Dip Duo (cheese and guacamole) is more substantial and memorable than typical appetizers.

Additionally, even though R+D has an extensive wine selection, customers who are eager to sample a bottle of wine they have purchased at one of the area wineries are welcome to enjoy it with their dinner – with no corkage fee. The atmosphere is very modern and unpretentious.

Try any of these recommended casual restaurants, and you’ll see why Yountville is a haven for food and wine lovers even on a modest budget.
