Stellar Yountville Dining

Walking down Washington Street in Yountville, you’ll come to some extraordinary dining establishments, almost any of which could be grouped into the same culinary category as the Thomas Keller collection of restaurants (see “Top Yountville Dining: The Keller Constellation”). At the helm are some of Napa Valley’s best-known chefs, with menus that are influenced not only by California, France and Italy, but also by a modern eco-consciousness.

Starting at the top is the incomparable Redd, a beautiful and sophisticated room that is finished in contemporary white, with attentive, yet unobtrusive staff buzzing around. Redd is the product of Chef Richard Reddington and his partners, who opened the award-winning restaurant in 2005. Chef Redd trained at some of the very best restaurants in California and has put together dinner, lunch and brunch menus that feature his signature dishes that pair with a  spectacular wine list varied enough for anyone to find something they like. You can select entrees such as sashimi of hamachi on sticky rice and edamame with a lime ginger sauce; glazed pork belly with apple purée, burdock and soy caramel; carnaroli risotto with Maine lobster, lemon confit and white truffle oil; Petrale sole set on creamy jasmine rice, mussels and chorizo, with a saffron curry – all with an assortment of appropriate sides. Corkage is $25 per 750ml for your first two bottles.

Redd Wood
Move on up and across the street, and you’ll find Reddington’s Redd Wood, a beautifully stylish yet casual destination that features an osteria-styled menu and Napa/Sonoma favored wine list. There is a fine selection of wood-fired pizzas, house-made pastas with locally sourced ingredients, a collection of terrines, pates and cured meats, and roasted quail and ribeye offerings at lunch, throughout the afternoon and dinner. And since it is also connected to the North Block Hotel, there are breakfast delights on the weekends, too. The wine and beverage list is comprehensive, with cocktails, craft beers, local wines and many coffees, teas and sodas. Corkage is $20 per bottle, so you may want to bring your own wine.

Bistro Jeanty
Bistro Jeanty is a little touch of France in Yountville. It is named after the founder, Phillipe Jeanty, who was born and raised in France’s Champagne region and immigrated here. Chef Jeanty has created a menu that consists of both local favorites, with their seasonal ingredients, and classic country French dishes. Food is served in a charming setting, unchanged much from its opening nearly 20 years ago, with a main dining room, patio and a small bar. Here you’ll find such morsels as sole meuniere, boeuf bourguignon, cassoulet or filet au poivre among others – with the appropriate sides and cheeses. As for the wine, Bistro Jeanty’s list is inclusive, with wines from both the Napa Valley and the various regions of France. Corkage is buy one/get one free, or $25 per bottle. In addition, there is a full bar.

Located across Washington Street and up from Bistro Jeanty in a marvelous old building is Bottega, Chef Michael Chiarello’s very fine restaurant, with comfortable seating and warming fireplaces both inside and out. Here in his “artist’s workshop,” Chiarello has fashioned lunch and dinner antipasti, paste, secondi and contorni offerings that are full of flavor and beautifully presented. The menu represents his take on micro-regional Italian cuisine and showcases local sources and such house-made ingredients as pastas, cured meats, fresh cheeses and cured olives. The wine list is vast and comprehensive, featuring many local, small production vintages from California complemented with a solid collection of Italian wines, as well as Chiarello’s own wines. There is a corkage fee of $30 per bottle for the first two bottles.

Lucy Restaurant & Bar
Here is the latest, most modern décor built around a lovely garden (which supplies both the bar and restaurant), with spa comfort being stressed everywhere. Lucy Restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, mid-afternoon snacks, happy hour and dinner – all featuring spectacular spa food, along with some old-fashioned favorites. Under Executive Chef Nate Lindsay, the menu is varied, locally sourced and excellent, with regional and seasonal choices such as Sonoma lamb with gremolata, fig yogurt, black rice and garbanzo bean, and the last harvest fruit salad featuring figs, pluots, mascarpone crème, marcona almond, chorizo and honeycomb. The wine, beer and cocktail list is vast, with offerings from around the world as well as the Napa Valley. The corkage fee at Lucy is $25 per bottle.
